Transfiguration Is For The Birds

Twilight doesn't gallop all the way back to Ponyville, but she doesn't slow down until the Everfree Forest is well and truly behind her. She doesn't go straight into town, though; she skirts around to the east, until she reaches the hollow oak tree in which Fluttershy makes her home.

She knocks one forehoof gently against the door. "Fluttershy? Are you there?"

It's only a moment before Fluttershy opens the door.

"Oh, Twilight? What is it?"

"I need your help." She turns so Fluttershy can see the tiny, bedraggled, bewildered-looking owl that's still perched on her back. "Can you take care of this little guy for a few days?"

"Oh my goodness! What happened?" she asks, coming out for a closer look. Then she realizes that Twilight asked a question. "Oh, um, of course I can."

"Some insane human in Milliways was abusing the poor thing," says Twilight, her face turning sour. "He said it was an enchanted human, but I'm not about to take his word for it."

If it's possible, Fluttershy's eyes get even wider at that. "Do... do you know how long the spell would last, if he was telling the truth?"

As she speaks, she lifts from the ground a little and gently scoops up the owl in her front hooves.

"Not yet. I'm going to find out, though. I know there's a way of telling if something is enchanted or not, I just need to find it in my books."

(The owl, for its part, is still too bewildered to do anything but lie still as Fluttershy picks it up.)

"Well, I hope you can find it soon. It must be just awful to be stuck in a different shape." And if it really is just an owl, the sooner they know, the sooner Fluttershy can help it find a place to settle.

"I can imagine." She gives the little owl an affectionate nuzzle. "Don't worry, fella, we'll get you fixed up soon."

Twilight doesn't care what the crazy human claimed this owl was guilty of. No one deserves to be stuck in the wrong body for their entire life.
