As Twilight leads the little foal down the path, the character of the woods around them changes. The trees are bigger, the brambles thicker, and the few plants that are still growing look considerably more... exotic than what one generally sees around Milliways. The most noticeable change, though, is in the weather. The thin layer of snow and frost on the ground is replaced by thick snowdrifts that crunch under their hooves, and the leaden sky of a Scottish winter gives way to a clear dark blue. The setting sun makes the snow gleam gold and pink as the trees thin out and give way to rolling hills.

"Alright. If anyone asks, your name is Sharp Tack and you're a friend of the family visiting from Canterlot."

"Oh!" Twilight blinks in surprise; the thought had honestly not occurred to her. "You think that's feasible in your world?"

"If I'm careful about it, yeah, I've done it before." Tyler replies, looking to see where Spike is in his meal before continuing. "I'd have to let Cecil and Julie know about it, but they'd be okay with it."

And he's been pretty much working the carte blanche on Milliways with the Ministry of Extraordinary Defense.

"I'd have to do some research first," says Twilight, stroking her chin thoughtfully. "Do you know of any books that would be good for studying your local customs?"

"None off the top of my head, but I think there's some guidebooks that Bar's been giving me for teaching non-humans about Amercian human culture..."Tyler replies, now thoughtfully eyeing the buffet again. "I think the biggest concern might be clothing for appropriate times and places though, that's the biggest hurdle I've run into at least."

"So you have to wear clothes all the time?"

"Yeah, and there's different clothes for boys and girls...there's people who make a stink about different colors that're supposed to be worn by either but they're kinda jerks." Tyler replies. "And clothes you're supposed to wear under the clothes everyone sees."

"Doesn't that get uncomfortable?"

"...not really? Some of it's clothes meant to kept a body warm, or to protect certain body parts, but I could be a little biased since I've grown up with it." Tyler answers after thinking a moment. "And that's just the clothing in America's culture...if you travelled to another country the natives there would have their own set of clothing rules for either gender."

"Well, that much is obvious," says Twilight. "But still, your species sure does like to make things complicated, doesn't it?"

Spike surfaces from his supper to look quizzically at the two ponies. "Wht r yh tlkin' abhht?" he mumbles around a mouthful of gingerbread and icing sugar.

"Talking to Twilight about some story ideas I had, and asking about some topics that might give me some new ideas for building the world." Tyler replies, "I'm going to go get another plate..."

Oh, sure. Leave Twilight with the nosey dragon hatchling asking questions she can't adequately answer.

...oh, wait, nevermind, Spike is just going back to eating.

If it sounds boring enough, people don't ask questions. Very simple plan that.

The second time through the buffer, Tyler's loading his plate up as heavily as he can carry with his mouth... Lots more of the eggplant, but even more fresh moon cakes.

"Mhmmm."

It's a good thing you got your fill, Tyler, because Spike is going back for round two. (Or possibly three. Or four. Who knows?)

Fifteen minutes and a lot of questions on human culture later...

"Yoo-hoo! Sharp Tack!"

That would be Rarity, magically carrying a shopping bag as she trots over to their table.

"Oh! Hi Rarity!" Tyler's looking up from his plate, and he's finally starting to feel nice and full, though still a bit chilled. "Sorry, did I take too long coming back?"

"Oh, not at all," says Rarity. "But I finished faster than I expected and I just had to show you--"

And out comes the cape, now sized much smaller and with a line of pink sapphires along the lower hem, to boot.

"Oh wow ...Jewel's going to love that scarf!"

"And this one's for your mother..." Out comes a similar cape hemmed with tourmaline. "And I know you didn't ask for it, but this is just so you."

'This' is a fuzzy wool hat with earflaps and a pompom, in a deep navy blue with bright yellow stars appliqued on. Rarity plops it on Tyler's head and magically ties the chinstrap for him.

"Oh COOL!" He's grinning right now. "This is perfect, thanks Rarity! I almost can't wait to get back home and give that scarf to Mom!"

And the hat's doing a very sharp job of getting his head and ears warmed right back up.

"Oh, think nothing of it, dear," says Rarity. "Consider it my Hearth's Warming present to you. --oh, and here's your lantern back," she adds. "Almost forgot!"

"Oh! I almost forgot that too." Tyler's just going to grab up the bag with his neat little lantern and the very chic gifts for his mother and Julie. "Thanks again! I'll let Uncle Ray know you're interested in his opals."

"You're welcome," says Rarity. "Now, I'd better be getting back to the stall. Time waits for no pony."

"You're not going to go stargazing?" asks Twilight.

"They're just stars, Twilight," says Rarity as she saunters away. "If you've seen one, you've seen them all."

No, not really...but Tyler's in no mood to spoil the warm fuzzy feeling he's got right now with arguing about the stars, just looking up overhead past the lights and grinning.

The stars here in Equestria are really quite different than home...

And yet there are a few familiar constellations to be seen...

"So!" Twilight stands up from the table. "Speaking of stargazing, we should head up the hill. Owlowiscious will have a spot saved for us..."

"Okay, should we stop by your house and grab some quilts and blankets for the night too?" He's going to wrestle that lantern out of the bag and away from the scarves to carry it out proudly. And once Tyler's got it lit he's really looking pleased with himself.

"Nah, I had Owlowiscious take care of that too," says Twilight. "He's pretty resourceful."

"Little showoff," Spike mutters.

Twilight gives the dragonlet a sharp look. "Spike, be nice. We've been over this."
